This Pedigree was created to reference the broodfish that make this farm what it is. This can help our customers understand the bloodlines of PKF babies. And in articles and journal entries these fish are discussed.
But there is a more important reason for the establishment of this Pedigree. Koi breeding is like the breeding of all animals; it is centered around pedigrees and bloodlines. In other animals this information is written down-- there is a written history to the animal you have. In koi this is not written down. It is passed on literally through the broodstock. And fathers verbally tell sons and daughters from generation to generation how to breed and cull their particular broodstock.
With this Pedigree, you can access the bloodlines of Purdin Koi Farm. You can see the female broodfish and the male broodfish. Important babies, such as the one pictured, are listed by date of birth and pedigree, i.e. PKF 97 (Teisi x Ziggy).
PKF 97 refers to the year born - all our koi are hatched in May of such and such a year; in this case PKF 97 is used to classify all fry born in 1997. Teisi refers to Teisi, a Taisho Sanke brood female and Ziggy, a Taisho Sanke brood male. By simply going into the Pedigree, you can read about the history of your fish.
This is helpful for many reasons. Taisho Sankes from Teisi because of her bloodline mature later. Her white thickens as she grows older. This impacts many things. One is her hi or red. In some females the hi doesn't finish until after ten years. This is quite a wait. But if you want a fish like this, patience is necessary. This knowledge is the essence of selecting high quality fish when they are young.
